-----------------------------------

“Susannas Story reads like Jane Austen meets Last of the Mohicans” -- Carol Shields

“This graphic version does justice to the many facets of [Moodies] tale. It will introduce a new generation of readers to a figure who remains both iconic and - despite all the attention lavished upon her over the past forty-five years - mysterious." - Margaret Atwood

“Susanna Moodie: Roughing It in the Bush is a brilliant story of fortitude and resolution that exposes the scars and charms of a life lived and a country born.” -- Can Lit for Little Canadians

“It doesnt get more Canadian than this!... this amazing version (of “Roughing It in the Bush”) is awesome and young and old will get a real kick out of it.” -- Dewey Divas

"Its a marvelously strange experience to see this time and setting in a graphic novel and in Susanna Moodies own words, I think kids 10 and up would be fascinated by this glimpse of the beginnings of Canada." - Michele Landsberg on The Next Chapter with Shelagh Rogers (CBC Radio 1)

-----------------------------------

A Romantic writer in Regency era London, Susanna Moodie’s life is turned upside down when she and her husband embark for the backwoods of Canada in 1832. Utterly unprepared for the hardships of pioneer life, the Moodies soon find themselves starving in a hostile wilderness. In order to survive, Susanna cranks out autobiographical accounts of her family’s misfortunes leading to the publication of “Roughing It in the Bush”, her bitter expose of the horrific living conditions in the backwoods. Written as a warning to others, Susannas book revealed the human cost in lives ruined by the lies of greedy land merchants, transforming its author into a controversial figure praised in Britain and the United States but condemned by many as a traitor in Canada.

-----------------------------------

Susanna Moodie: Roughing It in the Bush is a beautifully-realized story for anyone interested in Canadian history and culture: for cynics, for students, for immigrants, for fans of graphic novels and of Jane Austen, and for readers just discovering the contrarian Mrs. Moodie and the delightful, insightful Carol Shields.
